Museum Folkwang, Essen (D)
Kategorie: New Construction
Auftrag: Museological guidelines for the architectural competition by the city of Essen; expert on the competition jury
Auftraggeber: Neubau Museum Folkwang Essen GmbH
Team: Dieter Bogner
Jahr: 2006-07
Eröffnung: January 30, 2010
The Folkwang Museum in Essen contains one of the most important collections of classical modern art in Germany. Due to the relocation of the Ruhrland Museum to the World Cultural Heritage site “Zollverein”, the recently vacated area is now available for a new building and thus an extension of the existing museum.
In consultation with bogner.cc, an international architectural competition was prepared and the necessary museological basis for a modernized exhibition area of double size was created.
Winner of the architectural competition 2007 were David Chipperfield Architects.
The new building, which cost €55 million to build, opened on January 30th, 2010 and was fully financed by the Alfred Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung.
