Comprehensive Museum Strategy, Salzburg (A)
Kategorie: Strategic Museum Concept
Auftrag: Master plan for the main collections of the state and the city of Salzburg
Auftraggeber: Salzburg County
Team: Dieter Bogner, Wolfgang Meisinger
Zeitraum: 2004-2006
The master plan completed in 2006 develops a trilogy. One broad historical/cultural topic and one historic building complex that can be linked to this go to make up a conceptual whole: Under the main theme “Salzburg’s rise to power” the aim is to concentrate the history and culture of Salzburg from early mediaeval times to 1500 in Hohensalzburg Castle. The second main theme, “Heaven and Earth in one hand”, restores the original unity of the cathedral and Residence complex in combination with the paintings of the Residence Gallery, the holdings of the Cathedral Museum, and the cabinet of art and curiosities in a fascinating tour that presents Salzburg as the baroque Prince-Bishops knew it. “The Salzburg Myth”, the third theme, is located in Salzburg Museum in the New Residence. Based on the drastic events for Salzburg city and state around 1800 – the end of the Prince-Bishops’ secular rule and the beginning of Salzburg as a city of burghers – the reorganisation focuses on a series of influential phenomena in these two eras and examines their relevance to present-day Salzburg.
The first major step in implementing the plan has already been taken. The new display of the collections of Salzburg Museum went on show in June 2007.
